SPRING 2021

Unnoticed Spaces introduces a vision for diverse, affordable housing in walkable neighborhoods. It transforms six parking spots at Jepson-Young Lane and Bidwell Street, near a Japanese garden and school, into a mixed-use building. It aims to address urban challenges like housing affordability and the need for childcare, while promoting sustainability with green roofs, solar panels, and rainwater harvesting. This project showcases a model for revitalizing urban areas by creating inclusive, sustainable, and community-centered living environments.

The Japanese garden nearby offers a unique aesthetic and cultural element, providing residents and visitors with a tranquil escape from the urban hustle. It serves as a natural complement to the project, aligning with its sustainability goals and enhancing the overall quality of life for the community. The presence of a school within walking distance adds a critical dimension of family-friendliness and educational accessibility, making the area more attractive to a diverse demographic, including young families and educators.

BUILDING DESIGN

A holistic approach to sustainability is pivotal, ensuring that the development not only minimizes its impact on the environment but also promotes the well-being of its residents and the broader community. The selection of channel glass as a key building material exemplifies the project's innovative approach to sustainability. Channel glass, known for its thermal efficiency and ability to diffuse natural light deeply into interior spaces, significantly reduces the need for artificial lighting and heating, thus lowering energy consumption.
